10 years online, wohoo! When I started this hobby web project I had no idea it would survive for this long. But here we are!
To tell you the truth, I didn’t have much of an ambition. Some years had passed since I killed of a successful blog. Which had an entirely different “concept”, purpose and direction. That project was ended because of lack of time, lack of interest and, I guess, lack of direction.
Despite it’s shortcomings it had lots of visitors. Done today perhaps even generated a small income. But making money has never been a driver for me, whether that project or this one. I have a job, and this is a hobby. Which is why you find no ads here.
10 years later
Minus some minor adjustments the site more or less identical to how it looked in the beginning. You know how the saying goes. If it works don’t fix it. Being an older IT professional, who’ve had many different roles, also being systems administrator, changes are something one implements, cautiously. I’ve simply had too many sleepless nights and pulled out too many hairs over problems connected to changes.
For sure, it’s both cool and interesting with novelties. But when you’ve been doing it for a living, you learn. Learn to take things down a notch or two. IT or web solutions are, to some extent, like organic life or growth. They take time to “solidify”, to settle, to work or function properly. Making changes for the purpose of just changing stuff seldom pays off. it might actually do the opposite, lead to confusion, reduce visibility.
On another page I wrote “First time fanciness may become tomorrows nuisance”. That’s how it goes, with web things. I have thought about changing the design of this place. Many times. It’s kinda old-fashioned but the content is the most important thing. Readable content, and decent pictures.
Meynstream, why?
Well because I like to share stuff. But not just anything. It needs to have a purpose, optimally also a potential value for others. Even if the concept of “value”, especially when we talk about content in various forms, is an abstraction. Unquantifiable. From time to time I do get comments, and mails. From various people. That confirms it does have some degree of value, to others.
When I started this project I didn’t really have any grand plan. The purpose was to share content, but not any kind. Not randomly, even if that did also happen, at times. Not long after I’d set up the domain, or approximately 10 years ago, I returned to riding a motorcycle. 32 odd years had passed since I departed from riding.
Coinciding more or less with this web project I found at least parts of a purpose. To share reflections, stories. To share information and views, about all things motorcycle. Plus travel, tours, and places to go. Whether in my country, or anywhere else. You may also find lots of pictures. From around Norway or various countries and places Europe. The collection just keeps growing.
10 years old lab
However, even if it might not be obvious, if it isn’t that means I’ve succeeded, the site is also a (web) lab. Yes, a web lab. Most of what you find here, has actually been put together with some degree of insight. What permeates most of the posts, is web optimization. Also known as Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.
You might call it a “science” project. Looking at the traffic development I have to say it’s been fairly successful. However, as with all or most things in life, one has to keep trying, keep developing, trying new things, going new ways. Today’s rules and standard might become tomorrow’s museum pieces.
But it’s not all about science. It’s as much about writing stuff that has some degree value, that is useful. And that it can be easily understood. This site gets traffic from all over the planet. So I do hope that it does have, and will continue to have, some value.
All this said I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has stopped by, while hoping you will return.
